Tips on Boot Care

Red Wing's sturdy soles, premium leathers, triple stitching and Goodyear welt construction all work together to make quality boots that will last a lifetime. It takes more than 230 steps to hand craft each pair of Red Wing Shoes but it only takes three steps to keep them clean, conditioned and protected. Actively maintaining leather is the most effective way to ensure integrity and longevity.

Oil-Tanned leather is made with minimal finishing materials, which creates a distinctive natural look and feel. Oil-Tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless Red Wing styles over the years. It is water, stain, and perspiration resistant.

1. CLEAN: Use warm water and a brush to remove dirt from footwear. Dry with a cloth. For heavily soiled areas, apply Foam Leather Cleaner with a cloth or brush. Wipe cleaner away with a damp cloth and allow leather to dry.

2. CONDITION: Apply a light, even coat of All Natural Boot Oil, Mink Oil, or All Natural Leather Conditioner to leather with fingers, cloth, or sponge. Proper conditioning keeps leather healthy and extends the life of footwear.

3. PROTECT: Lightly mist footwear with Leather Protector six to eight inches away from the leather in a sweeping motion. Leather Protector provides a shield against dirt and moisture. It will not darken footwear.

Roughout and Nubuck leather is created using a reverse-suede technique. Many tanneries split and thin hides to create suede, but the Red Wing tannery simply uses the other side of the hide. This allows us to create beautiful roughout and nubuck leather with no loss of durability.

1. CLEAN: Use the Cleaner Bar from the Roughout/Nubuck Cleaner Kit on soiled area of footwear. If stain persists, wet Cleaner Bar and repeat. Allow leather to dry and use the Bristle Brush to restore the leather’s nap.

2. CONDITION: Lightly apply Mink Oil to Muleskinner Leather. Mink Oil will darken leather and should only be used sparingly. Allow the leather to dry. All other Roughout and Nubuck leathers do not require conditioning.

3. PROTECT: Lightly mist footwear with Leather Protector six to eight inches away from the leather in a sweeping motion. Leather Protector provides a shield against dirt and moisture. It will not darken footwear.

Smooth-finished leather has a polished surface that showcases its beauty and quality. Smooth-finished leather is made strictly from top-quality hides and is used to build premium Red Wing Heritage styles. This leather requires more specialized care and attention.

1. CLEAN: Use a quick exam every few weeks to determine if the leather needs maintenance. Use warm water and a soft bristle brush to remove stuck-on dirt. Then use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away any remaining excess dirt.

2. CONDITION: Apply Leather Cream or Neutral Boot Cream to any smooth-finished leather to hydrate the leather without darkening and bolster water resistance. Black, Brown, or Burgundy Boot Creams can be used to cover scuffs on corresponding leather color.

3. PROTECT: Add extra protection to preserve your footwear. Lightly mist footwear with Leather Protector six to eight inches away from the leather in a sweeping motion. Leather Protector provides an invisible shield against moisture, dirt, oil and mud. It will not darken footwear.
